There is no single best weapon — Ghost of Yotei uses a weapon counter system where each of the eight weapon types is strong against specific enemy types. The katana is the most balanced all-rounder and the safest starting point, the yari shines against spearmen and groups, and the ōdachi breaks heavy guards. Most players keep a katana for duels plus one ranged option such as the bow or a tanegashima matchlock, and swap weapons mid-fight to counter whatever they are facing.

The game lets you hunt the Yotei Six in any order, but The Snake is widely recommended as your opening target because it is the most approachable fight and teaches the duel basics you need for the rest. The final confrontation with Lord Nariaki Saito is a multi-phase fight that demands your strongest build and resolve economy. Between them, the remaining lieutenants can be tackled in any order — many players leave the harder, weapon-specific fights until after they have upgraded their gear and unlocked extra charm slots.

A focused playthrough of the main hunt for the Yotei Six takes around 30 to 35 hours, while players who chase side activities — duels, bounties, collectibles and the open-world activities — can easily spend 50 hours or more. The platinum trophy and 100% completion route is the longest commitment and touches every collectible type, all 27 duels and the 22 challenge locations. New Game+ adds further replay value with Soul Flowers and exclusive rewards.

New Game+ unlocks after the credits and lets you restart the story while keeping all of your equipment, upgrades and cosmetics. The key new resource is Soul Flowers, which you earn during the playthrough and spend at the New Game+ merchant on exclusive armor sets and new upgradeable gear. Enemy scaling is higher, so you will want a refined build rather than the one that carried you through the first run. Difficulty and charm loadouts carry over as well.

Legends is a free co-op multiplayer update that shipped on March 10 2026 for all Ghost of Yotei owners. After updating your game you can access the Legends menu from the main title screen, team up with up to four players online (a PlayStation Plus subscription is required for online play) and take on the Six Blades of Yotei missions. The Complete Edition bundles Legends together with the Echoes of Sekigahara expansion and the Most Wanted survival mode.

The Complete Edition arrives on October 1 2026 and bundles the base game with the free Legends co-op update, the Echoes of Sekigahara narrative expansion and the new Most Wanted survival mode. It is aimed at both new players who want everything in one package and returning players who want the full experience. The Echoes of Sekigahara expansion adds a new narrative chapter set in the conflict-torn world of the period, while Most Wanted brings wave-based survival challenges to the co-op mode.
